Not a Noun, the book, extends the idea behind the practice.
We are conditioned from a young age to introduce ourselves with what we are: a role, a title, a category. I believe that true identity, and the motivation and purpose that flow from it, should not revolve around a static noun. The self is a constant flow of complex interactions; always in motion, and always at the mercy of interpretation by others.
One has a lot of time to reflect and philosophise when spending 44 days alone at sea, and during that time Not a Noun, the concept, was conceived. On starting to write this book, I realised I had only just scratched the surface; training in interpersonal facilitation began, and the bones for the book continued to grow — rooted in the academic foundations of Gestalt philosophy and resilient performance science, exploring what happens when we stop labelling and start becoming.
